Bunraku is the name of a form of traditional Japanese puppet drama that started during the Edo period (1868-1912). Bunraku is a union of three art forms in which a chanter, shamisen player and puppets manipulators. The chanter not only recites the dialogue for all the characters, but also relates the spectacle of the scene and explains the background behind the event. The shamisen player provides the essential background music of Bunraku. The puppets are manipulated by three puppeteers. Harmony between three parts is an essential criteria that determines the quality of the performance.
